What things are most important to take with you on a holiday? For Oscar Wilde it was his diary - "I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read on the train."

Your holiday essentials will vary depending on who you are and what type of trip you are going on, and this article considers some of the main holiday items you might want to pack for a trip to Dorset over the summer months.

Camera

One of the most important things to take on holiday with you is a good camera. Many people forget to bring one, or get so caught up in enjoying their holiday that don’t remember to take any photos to record the occasion.

The great thing about taking photos is that they will allow you to re-live your holiday over and over again for years to come.

Most of us at some point will have experienced that feeling of picking up a photograph from a long time ago and it bringing back the same kind of emotion as you felt at the time it was taken. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to capture the happy times by not having a camera with you when you go on holiday.

Dorset has many stunning views and landmarks to see, especially along the world famous Jurassic Coast, so it’s also useful to have a camera on hand to get photos of these breath-taking sights. Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Chesil Beach are among the most photographed natural landmarks in the country, so take the chance to capture them on camera if you take a holiday in Dorset.

As for what type of camera you need, it’s recommended that you opt for a digital one, as this will make it easy for you to upload holiday photos to your computer and share them with your friends and family online. Digital cameras can be purchased fairly cheaply nowadays, and you ideally want one with a zoom, a flash and a minimum of 8 megapixels.

Walking Boots

With its gorgeous picturesque countryside, quaint villages and dramatic coastline, Dorset is a great place for walks, whether it is a gentle stroll or a 20 mile ramble. While there are lots of sedate, easy-going footpath routes, there are also many areas popular with walkers which involve traversing steep hills, rocks and muddy fields.

This kind of terrain can present a challenge to some shoes, so it is often a good idea to invest in a pair of good sturdy hiking boots or trainers. These can be bought from most camping or outdoor stores, as well as many shoe shops.

The ideal walking shoes should be comfortable, hard-wearing and also waterproof, because there’s nothing worse than walking through a puddle and getting wet socks because your shoes let the water in!

Sunscreen

Whether you are sitting on Weymouth beach or exploring the old winding streets of Lyme Regis, if you are outside during the daytime for long periods then you are vulnerable to the sun’s rays. You could get a bad case of sunburn or even sunstroke, which would really put a damper on your holiday. It’s always better to err on the side of caution by bringing sunscreen or sun lotion with you on your trip.

The factor you need will differ depending on your skin, and people with fairer skin tend to burn more easily, so they will in general require a higher factor. Most of us can get by with a SPF 15 sun lotion, but it is recommended that children use at least SPF 25.
